E-Bike Security Guide UK 2026: Stop Thieves Before They Start
James Bettoni 3 min read17 July 2026

E-bike theft is a £65 million problem in the UK. Your bike is expensive, highly desirable, and easily resold. Here's how to make yours the one thieves skip.
The Threat Landscape
How e-bikes get stolen in the UK:
- Opportunity theft (40%): Unlocked or poorly locked bikes grabbed quickly
- Lock defeat (30%): Angle grinders, bolt cutters, leverage attacks
- Home burglary (20%): Targeted theft from sheds, garages, bike stores
- Violent theft (10%): Rider threatened or attacked (rare but increasing in cities)
Lock Strategy: The Layered Approach
Minimum: Sold Secure Gold D-Lock
- Brands: Kryptonite, Hiplok, Abus
- Cost: £60-£120
- Lock through frame AND rear wheel to an immovable object
Better: D-Lock + Chain
- D-lock through frame to anchor
- Chain through both wheels
- Different lock types = different tools needed to defeat both
- Cost: £100-£200 total
Best: Above + Wheel Locks
- Pitlock or Hexlox skewers on both wheels and seat post
- Prevents component theft even if the frame lock isn't attacked
- Cost: £150-£300 total

- Mark the frame: BikeRegister UV marking or chemical etching
If You're Stolen From
- Report to police immediately (101 or online) — get a crime reference
- Notify your insurance provider
- Post on local cycling groups (Facebook, Reddit)
- Check eBay, Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace daily
- Alert BikeRegister (they notify if it's found)
- Check your GPS tracker data immediately
The Psychology of Theft Prevention
Thieves operate on risk vs reward vs time:
- Increase time: Two locks = twice as long to steal
- Increase risk: Park in busy, well-lit, CCTV-covered areas
- Decrease reward: Make your bike look less valuable than it is (without ruining it)
A thief will always choose the easier target. Make your bike harder than the one next to it.
