The battery is the single most important (and expensive) component of any e-bike. Understanding how they work, how to maintain them, and what to look for when buying saves you money and frustration.

Battery Basics

Capacity (Wh)

Measured in Watt-hours (Wh). This is your fuel tank size.

  • 250-400Wh: Light commuting, road e-bikes, folding bikes
  • 400-600Wh: Standard commuting, light trail riding
  • 600-750Wh: Serious trail/mountain riding
  • 750Wh+: All-day adventures, heavy cargo bikes

Voltage (V)

Standard e-bikes run 36V or 48V systems. Higher voltage generally means more power potential:

  • 36V: Standard EAPC-legal bikes
  • 48V: Performance e-bikes, some cargo bikes
  • 52V+: Sur-Ron class machines (not EAPCs)

Cells

Most quality e-bikes use Samsung, LG, or Panasonic 18650 or 21700 cells. The cell manufacturer matters for longevity and safety. Avoid unknown-brand cells in budget bikes.

Factors That Affect Range

  1. Assist level (eco vs turbo is 2-3x difference)
  2. Terrain and elevation gain
  3. Rider weight
  4. Wind conditions
  5. Temperature
  6. Tyre choice and pressure
  7. Cadence (higher cadence = more efficient)

Battery Lifespan

A quality e-bike battery should deliver:

  • 500-1000 full charge cycles before dropping to 80% capacity
  • 3-7 years of typical use
  • Gradual decline, not sudden failure

At 80% capacity, the battery still works perfectly — you just have 20% less range. Most riders won't notice until capacity drops below 70%.

Charging Best Practices

  1. Charge at room temperature (15-25°C)
  2. Don't always charge to 100% — 80-90% extends lifespan
  3. Don't store at 0% or 100% — 40-60% is ideal for storage
  4. Use the supplied charger — third-party chargers can damage cells
  5. Charge after cooling — wait 30 minutes after riding
  6. Never charge unattended overnight — good practice for any lithium battery

When to Replace

Signs your battery needs replacement:

  • Range has dropped below 60-70% of original
  • It won't hold charge for more than a day
  • Charging takes dramatically longer
  • Error codes related to battery on your display
  • Physical swelling (stop using immediately)
