Full suspension has dominated XC World Cups for years. But hardtails haven't disappeared — they've evolved. The S-Works Epic HT remains one of the lightest race bikes ever made. But when should you choose it over the full-suspension Epic 8?

When to Choose the Hardtail

• Ultra-smooth XC courses with minimal technical features
• Pure climbing races (hillclimbs, time trials)
• Riders who value simplicity and low maintenance
• Budget priority (saving money for other gear)
• Riders under 65kg who want the lightest possible race setup

When to Choose Full Suspension

• Technical UK courses (roots, rocks, off-camber)
• Longer races where fatigue accumulates
• Riders over 70kg who benefit from rear suspension on impacts
• Any course where descending speed matters
• Multi-day stage races where recovery matters

UK-Specific Advice

British XC courses tend to be muddier, rootier, and more technical than continental European courses. For the majority of UK XC racing, full suspension is the safer — and usually faster — choice. The Epic 8 with Flight Attendant eliminates the traditional efficiency penalty of FS, making the hardtail's weight advantage its only clear benefit.

That said, if you're racing at venues with primarily smooth, fast tracks (like some of the Scottish courses), the hardtail's 1kg weight advantage is significant, especially on long climbs.

For UK XC racing in 2026, full suspension wins most of the time. The Epic 8's Flight Attendant system has effectively neutralised the efficiency argument, and our technical courses reward rear traction and comfort. The hardtail remains excellent for specific scenarios, but it's no longer the default race choice.
