Tarmac SL9 Groupset Options: SRAM Red AXS vs Shimano Dura-Ace Di2

The Only Decision You Need to Make
Both SL9 builds cost the same. Both use identical frames, forks, and wheels. The only difference is the groupset. Here's how to choose.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Feature | SRAM Red AXS | Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 |
|---|---|---|
| Shifting | Wireless, tactile click | Wired, silent & precise |
| Battery | Individual per derailleur | Central battery unit |
| Weight | ~1,530g | ~1,580g |
| Gearing | 1x or 2x options | 2x only |
| Braking | DOT fluid hydraulic | Mineral oil hydraulic |
| Hood Shape | Flatter, wider | More contoured |
| Charging | USB per component | Single internal port |
Shifting Feel
SRAM Red AXS: Pronounced click with definitive engagement. Shifts are instant but have a tactile "event" quality. The wireless system means zero cable friction and identical shift quality regardless of bike condition.
Dura-Ace Di2: Smooth, almost silent shifts. The wired system shifts marginally faster under heavy load. Semi-synchro and full-synchro modes automate front shifting entirely.
For UK Conditions
UK winter riding is brutal on groupsets. Here's how each handles:
SRAM: Individual batteries mean if one dies, you lose that derailleur. However, wireless means no cables to corrode or snag. DOT fluid brakes require annual bleeding.
Shimano: Central battery is easier to manage but the wired connections can suffer from water ingress at junction points. Mineral oil brakes are more maintenance-friendly in wet conditions.
Our Recommendation
Choose SRAM Red if: You prefer tactile shifting, want the lightest option, like wireless simplicity, or might run 1x in the future.
Choose Dura-Ace if: You prefer silent, effortless shifting, value synchro front shifting, trust wired reliability, or already know Shimano ergonomics.
Both are exceptional. You genuinely cannot make a bad choice here.
