S-Works vs Expert vs Comp: Specialized Range Explained for UK Buyers

TL;DR

S-Works is Specialized's ultimate tier: lightest frames, best components, highest price (£10,000-14,000). Expert uses the same frame as S-Works but with slightly lower-spec components (£5,000-9,000). Comp uses a different, heavier frame and mid-range components (£2,500-5,000). For most UK riders, Expert offers the best value because you get the top-tier frame at a significant discount.

The S-Works Tier

S-Works represents the absolute pinnacle. You get the lightest frame (FACT 12r carbon with the most advanced layup), the best groupset (SRAM Red AXS or Shimano Dura-Ace Di2), top-spec wheels (Roval CLX), and premium finishing kit. Every gram has been optimised.

The question is whether the extra £3,000-5,000 over Expert is justified. For professional racers and those who want the absolute best, yes. For enthusiast riders, the marginal gains are small: roughly 200-300g total weight saving and slightly crisper shifting.

The Expert Tier

Expert is the sweet spot in Specialized's range. The frame is identical to S-Works, meaning you get the same stiffness, weight, and ride quality. The savings come from components: SRAM Force instead of Red, Shimano Ultegra instead of Dura-Ace, and Roval carbon wheels instead of CLX.

These component differences are noticeable but not transformative. Force AXS shifts 95% as well as Red AXS. Ultegra Di2 is functionally identical to Dura-Ace Di2 in performance. The weight penalty is 150-250g, which most riders will never notice.

Expert is our top recommendation for serious UK riders. You get the race-winning frame and save thousands.

The Comp Tier

Comp uses the FACT 11r frame, which is a different carbon layup. It is heavier (typically 100-150g more than FACT 12r) and slightly less stiff. The ride quality is still excellent, but experienced riders can detect the difference in responsiveness during hard efforts.

Components at Comp level are solid: SRAM Rival AXS, Shimano 105 Di2, and aluminium or entry-level carbon wheels. These are reliable groupsets that perform well for years. The Comp tier represents excellent value for riders who want a proper Specialized bike without the premium price.

Upgrade Path

A smart strategy for UK buyers: purchase an Expert and upgrade individual components over time. Start with better wheels (the single biggest performance upgrade), then tyres, then consider groupset upgrades when components wear out.

FAQ

Is the Expert frame really the same as S-Works?

Yes, for the Tarmac SL9, Aethos, Stumpjumper, and most current Specialized models, the Expert and S-Works share the identical FACT 12r frame. Only the components differ.

Is Comp worth buying if I can stretch to Expert?

If the budget stretch is comfortable, Expert is a significantly better long-term investment because of the superior frame. If money is tight, the Comp is still an excellent bike that will serve you well for years.

Can I buy an S-Works frameset and build it myself?

Yes. Specialized sells S-Works framesets separately (typically £4,500-6,000 for road). This is a great option if you already own high-quality components from a previous bike.
