The Ultra Bee is Sur-Ron's step up from toy to tool. With a 12.5kW motor and motorcycle-grade suspension, it's positioned as a genuine electric motorcycle alternative. Does it deliver?

The Step Up from Light Bee

Everything is bigger. More power, more battery, more weight, more capability. The Ultra Bee isn't a toy anymore — it's a legitimate electric motorcycle that happens to be lighter than anything else in its performance bracket.

Riding Experience

Power

22.5kW peak is no joke. This thing accelerates hard enough to require genuine motorcycle skills. The torque comes on instantly (as with all electric motors) and will catch out anyone used to the progressive power delivery of a combustion engine.

Handling

At 88kg, the Ultra Bee sits in a fascinating middle ground. It's heavier than the Light Bee X but still dramatically lighter than any combustion equivalent. This translates to confidence-inspiring stability at speed while retaining much of the light-bike agility that makes Sur-Rons special.

Suspension

The USD fork and adjustable rear shock are a serious upgrade over the Light Bee's budget units. You can genuinely set this up for your weight and riding style, and it doesn't fall apart when you push hard.

Braking

Four-piston front caliper with a 220mm rotor. Finally adequate stopping power for the performance on offer.

Build Quality Concerns

The Ultra Bee is better built than the Light Bee, but at £7,000 you expect more:

• Wiring looms could be tidier and better waterproofed
• Some fasteners are soft and round out easily
• The display is basic compared to competitors
• Paint quality is average

UK Registration

Here's where it gets interesting. The Ultra Bee CAN be registered for road use in the UK as an L3e motorcycle, subject to:

• Type approval (available for some models)
• Insurance
• MOT
• Motorcycle licence (A2 minimum)

Check with your dealer whether their specific import has the correct type approval documentation. Not all do.

Battery & Maintenance

The 4kWh pack is substantial. Key maintenance points:

• Store between 40-80% charge when not riding
• Avoid charging below 5°C without a battery warmer
• Keep connections clean and apply dielectric grease
• The BMS handles cell balancing, but check voltages annually

Competition

The Verdict

The Ultra Bee is the most interesting vehicle in Sur-Ron's lineup because it genuinely competes with established motorcycle brands at half the price and two-thirds the weight. Build quality keeps it from being a wholehearted recommendation, but if you accept the compromises, nothing else offers this power-to-weight ratio at this price.
