Sur-Ron Ultra Bee Road Legal UK 2026: L3E Registration, Licence & Insurance

TL;DR
The Sur-Ron Ultra Bee T (L3E) is the only Ultra Bee variant road-legal in the UK. It comes factory-equipped with lights, mirrors, indicators, and a horn. You need at least an A1 motorcycle licence, DVLA registration, insurance, and an MOT after 3 years. The standard Ultra Bee is off-road only.
Which Ultra Bee Is Road Legal?
Direct Answer: Only the Ultra Bee T (also called L3E or road-legal variant) is road-legal in the UK. The standard Ultra Bee sold for off-road use cannot legally be ridden on public roads, even with aftermarket lights added.
| Model | Road Legal? | Classification |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra Bee (standard) | No | Off-road only |
| Ultra Bee T / L3E | Yes | L3e motorcycle |
| Ultra Bee HP | No | Off-road only |
The key difference is type approval. The Ultra Bee T has EU/UKCA type approval as an L3e vehicle, which means it meets all the construction and safety requirements for road use. Adding lights to a standard Ultra Bee does not make it road-legal.
What the T Model Includes
Factory-fitted road-legal equipment:
- LED headlight with dipped and main beam
- Rear light and brake light
- Front and rear indicators
- Mirrors (both sides)
- Horn
- Number plate mounting and light
- Speedometer (calibrated for road use)
- Certificate of Conformity (CoC) for registration
Licence Requirements
Direct Answer: The Ultra Bee T is classified as an L3e motorcycle. You need at minimum an A1 licence (light motorcycle, 125cc equivalent). An A2 or full A licence also covers it.
| Licence | Minimum Age | Covers Ultra Bee T? |
|---|---|---|
| AM (moped) | 16 | No |
| A1 (light motorcycle) | 17 | Yes |
| A2 (medium motorcycle) | 19 | Yes |
| A (full motorcycle) | 21/24 | Yes |
| CBT only | 17 | For L1e models only |
Registration Process
- Obtain the Certificate of Conformity (CoC) from your dealer
- Complete a V55/5 form (first registration of a new vehicle)
- Submit to DVLA with the CoC and proof of purchase
- Receive your V5C registration document
- Get number plates made
- Insure the vehicle before riding on the road
Your dealer should provide the CoC and guide you through this process. At Ebikes & Gear, we handle the paperwork for you.
Insurance
Direct Answer: Motorcycle insurance is mandatory. Specialist electric motorcycle policies are available from providers like Bennetts, Lexham, and Bikesure. Expect to pay £200–£600 per year depending on your age, location, and riding history.
Insure it as a motorcycle, not an e-bike. Some mainstream insurers don't yet list Sur-Ron models, so specialist brokers are often the best route.
Speed and Range on Road
- Top speed: 56 mph (90 km/h) — legal for all UK roads except motorways
- Range: 60–75 miles depending on speed
- Charge time: 3–4 hours
