Sur-Ron Winter Riding in the UK: Preparation & Tips

A UK winter tests every machine. Rain, mud, freezing temperatures, and salt combine to destroy unprepared bikes. Here's how to keep your Sur-Ron running through October to March.

Waterproofing Essentials

The Sur-Ron's Achilles heel in wet weather is its electrical connections. Water ingress causes:

• Connector corrosion leading to intermittent faults
• Controller issues from moisture
• Display failures
• Throttle sensor problems

What to Waterproof

1. Controller housing: Apply silicone sealant around the edges. Not permanent enough to prevent future access, but enough to keep water out.
2. Main harness connectors: Wrap with self-amalgamating tape and apply dielectric grease to every plug.
3. Throttle connector: Particularly vulnerable. Wrap and grease.
4. Display connector: Same treatment.
5. Battery terminals: Clean, grease, and ensure the battery housing seal is intact.
6. Motor connectors: Often overlooked. Apply grease and wrap.

Products You Need

• Dielectric grease (£5-£10)
• Self-amalgamating tape (£5-£8)
• Silicone sealant (£5-£8)
• ACF-50 or similar anti-corrosion spray (£12-£15)

Battery Care in Winter

Cold lithium batteries have reduced capacity and are vulnerable to damage:

• Never charge below 5°C: Bring the battery indoors or use a battery warmer
• Expect 15-25% range reduction: Plan shorter rides
• Store inside: Don't leave the bike (or at least the battery) in a freezing shed
• Warm up gently: First few minutes of riding, stay in eco mode to let cells warm gradually
• Check voltage more frequently: Cold accelerates any existing imbalance

Tyre Choice

Dry-weather tyres are death in UK winter mud. Options:

Run lower pressures in winter (reduce by 2-3 psi from summer settings) for better grip in slippery conditions.

Riding Technique Adjustments

Power Management

• Reduce power mode in slippery conditions
• Smoother throttle inputs prevent wheel spin
• Use engine braking (regen if available) rather than sudden brake inputs

Body Position

• Weight further back on slippery descents
• More central/forward on slippery climbs to maintain front traction
• Lower body position overall for stability

Braking

• Predominantly rear brake in slippery conditions
• Gradual application, never grab
• Brake before corners, not in them

Post-Ride Routine

After every wet ride:

1. Hose off (low pressure, never jet wash electrical components)
2. Dry all connectors with compressed air or a cloth
3. Apply ACF-50 to exposed metal and connectors
4. Check chain tension and lubricate
5. Inspect brake pads (mud wears them fast)
6. Bring battery inside to warm gradually before charging

Clothing & Safety

• Full waterproofs (motorcycle or MTB)
• Goggles with clear or yellow lenses for low light
• Winter gloves with grip (not thick skiing gloves)
• Proper boots with ankle support
• Knee and elbow pads always

The Reality Check

Winter riding on a Sur-Ron in the UK is brilliant fun. Silent riding through frost-covered woodland is genuinely magical. But it requires 20 minutes of prep before and 15 minutes of care after every ride. Skip the maintenance and you'll be fixing expensive electrical faults by February.
