Best Sur-Ron Upgrades 2026: Where to Spend Your Money First

The Sur-Ron Light Bee X is a brilliant base platform, but certain upgrades transform it from good to exceptional. Here's where to spend, in priority order.

Tier 1: Essential (Do These First)

1. Tyres (£80-£150)

The stock tyres are acceptable for dry conditions but sketchy in the wet. Upgrade to:

• Trails/singletrack: Maxxis Minion DHF/DHR II (proper mountain bike tyres that fit)
• MX track: Dunlop Geomax or Michelin Starcross
• Mixed: Pirelli Scorpion MX (great all-round compromise)

2. Brake Pads (£20-£40)

Sintered metallic pads offer dramatically better stopping power than the stock organic pads. Night and day difference in wet conditions.

3. Handlebar Grips (£15-£30)

Stock grips are thin and slippery. ODI or Renthal lock-on grips improve control and reduce hand fatigue immediately.

4. Chain Guide (£25-£50)

The Light Bee drops chains. A simple chain guide eliminates this issue entirely. One of the best £25 you'll spend.

Tier 2: Performance (Noticeable Improvement)

5. Controller Upgrade (£200-£400)

Aftermarket controllers (BAC or ASI) unlock more power and better throttle mapping. The difference is transformative — smoother power delivery and more top-end grunt.

6. Suspension Fork (£300-£600)

The stock fork works but has limited adjustment. A mid-range mountain bike fork (RockShox Pike, Fox 36) transforms the ride. Make sure to get the correct axle size and travel.

7. Rear Shock (£150-£350)

A proper adjustable shock (DNM, FastAce, or aftermarket air shock) lets you dial in the rear end for your weight and riding style.

8. Sprocket Change (£30-£60)

• Larger rear sprocket: More torque, less top speed (better for trails)
